Schubert, Franz (1797-1828)

Vienna-Alsergrund, Schuberthaus. - The courtyard of the house at Nußdorfer Strasse 54, where the composer was born and spent the first years of his life, from the garden side. Today the building, which dates from the 18th century, houses a memorial. The musical quotation shows the beginning of the song "Ständchen" ("Serenade") after a poem by Ludwig Rellstab from Schubert's last, posthumously published cycle "Schwanengesang" ("Swan song", D 957): "Leise flehen meine Lieder durch die Nacht zu dir" ("Softly my songs plead through the night to you").

Hand-colored etching by Herta Czoernig-Gobanz (1886-1970), estate signed. Plate size 21,5 x 17 cm (8½ x 6¾ in), sheet size 29 x 24 cm (11½ x 9½ in).
